Tripp Montgomery
Senior Gold & Silver
Tripp Montgomery is a dynamic figure in the world of competitive swimming, renowned for his transformative leadership of Carolina Aquatics in Columbia, South Carolina. In the summer of 2010, Coach Tripp took the helm of a struggling swim club with fewer than 40 athletes and a backdrop of discord between parents and coaching staff. Armed with the motto, "It’s all in the details," he quickly implemented strategies that focused on fine-tuning every aspect of the program. Under his guidance, the club saw a remarkable resurgence, growing to over 227 swimmers and establishing itself as the premier club in the Columbia area within just four years. A former swimmer himself, Coach Tripp is an alumnus of the influential David Marsh Auburn swimming program in the early '90s. His journey to coaching was anything but conventional.
Before diving into the world of swimming, Coach Tripp began his career as a clerk trader for the New York Stock Exchange for Lehman Brothers, where he thrived in the high-pressure environment of financial markets, managing millions in stocks. The meticulous attention to detail he honed during this time proved invaluable in his later role as a coach, where he parallels the investments of his athletes’ time and hard work with the stakes of competitive swimming. When technology began to reshape the financial sector, leading to the obsolescence of his role, Tripp seized the opportunity to pivot toward a field that ignited his passion for the outdoors and physical fitness. He took a position with REI, where he connected with his love for outdoor activities, all the while unknowingly steering himself back toward his true calling in the swim community.
Today, Coach Tripp Montgomery is not just a coach but an inspiring mentor who instills resilience and dedication in his athletes, emphasizing that success is often found in the smallest of details. His journey from the corporate world to the pool deck exemplifies his commitment to fostering a thriving environment for swimmers and reshaping the landscape of competitive swimming in his community.
